Bariatric Surgery in The North Estonia Medical Centre in 2013

In 2013 a total of 241 bariatric surgeries were performed in The North Estonia Medical Centre. The main surgical approach was gastric bypass surgery (87,5%) followed by gastric sleeve resection and gastric plication surgeries. All the operations were performed laparoscopically. The average duration of surgery was 72 minutes. On average, patients stayed in the hospital for 3 days. Perioperative mortality was 0% . There were two serious complications: one bleeding after sleeve resection (0.4%), and one anastomotic leakage after a gastric bypass operation, ( 0.4 % ) . Both of these cases required emergency reoperation (0,8%).

“Bariatric Surgery in North Estonian Medical Centre is a high quality and very safe ” says Dr. Ilmar Kaur, the head of Bariatric and Metabolic Surgery Department. By comparison, according to the data of Swedish bariatric registry the complication rates in Sweden in 2012 were as follows: emergency revision surgeries 3.05 %, bleedings 1.75% the leaks at the stitches 0.97%.

In 2013 the North Estonian Medical Centre adopted the new guide for anesthetists of how to handle bariatric patients during surgery. This has speeded up the recovery of patients after surgery and enhanced the quality.
